about me

i'm syd

Hey, I’m Syd (she/her)! I am a Canadian Certified Counsellor working towards registering as a Psychologist.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts from MacEwan University with a major in Sociology and a minor in Philosophy. Drawn to psychology, I returned to school, beginning an After Degree at the University of Alberta before completing a Master of Counselling at City University of Seattle. Throughout my learning and professional career, I have gained a breadth of experience working with adults and youth in a helping role. In addition to my work at Apricity, I have been a Youth and Adult Counsellor at the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton since 2023

In my time as a therapist and a client in therapy, I have grounded myself in the belief that everyone is capable of making meaningful and lasting changes that bring them closer to the person they strive to be. I see connection (to self, others, spirituality, etc.) as one of the most powerful healing tools to achieve this. In safe connection, I believe we can confront our traumas, shadows, and shame.

I use a feminist, client-centred, trauma-informed lens and pull from psychodynamic (specifically Jungian), narrative, and somatic modalities - all while weaving in intuition, existentialism, and perhaps a dash of mysticism. You can expect to explore not just your feelings but perhaps creativity, metaphors, and that which cannot always be explained. Like a spell, I will adjust my practice to best support your unique needs and goals.

Syd

I'm not afraid of the dark

Our shadows can often be intimidating to confront; shame, guilt, and discomfort often thrive in this environment. Know that I am not afraid of the dark, we can explore these shadows together and grow something wild.

We can get angsty

We can hold people, systems, and social constructs accountable for the impacts they have on us as individuals and as a collective. We can get angry, weepy, and loud about injustices. On your journey, we can deconstruct social expectations and challenge scripts of how we “ought” to think, feel, and act.

Weirdness is welcome

I welcome all folks who may feel strange, peculiar, or like they might not fit into status quo.

Me is all I'll ever be

I will show up as myself; which is non-judgemental, warm, and empathetic (the standard therapist pre-requisites), but also creative, kooky, eclectic, and hilarious (it is okay if you don’t laugh at my jokes; I will laugh enough for the both of us).
